Feeding the Wolf

March 26, 2018

When I was in elementary school, one of my teachers shared with us an old Indian parable that she called "The Tale of Two Wolves."

“A fight is going on inside me," said an old man to his son. "It is a terrible fight between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt,

resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other wolf is good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.

The same fight is going on inside you."

The son thought about it for a minute and then asked, "Which wolf will win?"

The old man replied simply, "The one you feed.”

My teacher would remind us of this story often and would ask us almost daily which wolf we were feeding.  You've probably heard this story before too.  I've seen it written and heard it shared many times over the years.

This morning as I was sitting down to write this blog entry, it came to mind again.

A little over two weeks ago, three of us sat down at a table inside Portillo's.  It was their first soft opening at the Mishawaka location.  Portillo's had generously given out "golden tickets" to hundreds of members of the community to come in and try their food for free!  Then they invited us to set up a table and to take donations for the food pantry from anyone who would like to donate.

People starting trickling in for lunch at 10:30 a.m.  By 11:00, they were pouring through the doors.  Not only were they excited about the food, but as soon as we told them we were taking donations for the MFP,  they opened their wallets and dove into their purses with smiles on their faces.

Within an hour, our money box was full!  We emptied it and before we could blink it was overflowing again!  Everyone was so kind and giving.  The donations that day definitely exceeded our expectations.

From each of the people, who came through the line, we were seeing "joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."  The good wolf was being fed that day.  It made me proud to be a part of this community.

On that day, we collected $9,374.00!

On Monday, March 19th, Mike went to Portillo's official grand opening.  During the opening, Portillo's presented the Mishawaka Food Pantry with a $5,000 check to match the first $5000 that we collected!

That made our grand total $14,374.00!

Because of your generosity, the good wolf is going to bed full and satisfied.  And so are many people in our community.

Thank you.
