In our picturesque gardens beside the parking lot, vegetables rest humbly, waiting to be picked and eaten by the wonderful guests of the Mishawaka Food Pantry.
Wait no longer, sweet veggie friends.
Yesterday, 142 people enjoyed a hot meal here at the Pantry and included in that meal were items from the first major harvest of our newfangled gardens.
“I feel like a proud father,” joked Mike Hayes, executive director of the pantry, “but I’m happy to add a healthy choice to the meals we serve on a day-to-day basis.”
Among the vegetables from our first major harvest were snow peas, cauliflower, broccoli and leaf lettuce. It made for a pretty out-of-sight salad, whipped up by our chef and kitchen manager, Rich Haden.
“I had five volunteers with me. We prepared the vegetables and cooked them on the grill. It was great showing someone how to use the grill here,” said Chef Rich.
Every day, our diligent and caring employees keep a watchful eye over the gardens. They make sure the vegetables are watered properly and given enough attention. Even on the weekends when the pantry is closed, a volunteer named Patrick Osterander comes and waters the plants for us.
“I got the chance to be a part of it,” said Pat, “and I haven’t got the chance to be a part of something like this in a long, long time.”
This is an excellent example of the dedication and willingness to help from our volunteer staff. We could not be any happier with these hard-working individuals.
All in all, we are blessed to have these organic friends living in our garden, and now we can reap the benefits of having a garden in the first place—by providing nutritious meals to our guests in need.
